In their own words, we asked students to think critically and reflect about the pros and cons of the 1/4 system, particularly their favourite and least favourite parts.

Academically, what is your FAVOURITE thing about the 1/4 system?

"Focus only on 2 classes"

  • We focus on 1-2 subjects at a time, making reviewing and studying way easier because there’s less subjects to worry about

    • You can remember concepts from the start of the year opposed to the semester where you completely forget because it has been so long​

  • Not having to deal with 3-4 different courses at once

    • Easier to concentrate per subject

    • It’s less stressful and you only have two classes to worry about at a time

    • Longer periods equal more time to study one the one subject

  • Lots of time each period

    • Having more time to do to work at school

    • I had more class time to ask questions

  • Less things to focus on- only two classes

    • Less finals to study for

  • Finishing a 5-credit course in just 2 months 

    • Faster paced learning

  • Too fast paced and it’s hard to catch up when you can’t come to school

    • The amount of content delivered in such a short time. I felt there was far less time to absorb the content presented and made actually learning all the more difficult. You also could not miss a day or you would be too far behind

  • Feels rushed and very stressful  

    • The content goes by too fast and its easy to fall behind on hours of homework

    • There’s not a lot of time to understand what’s going on. If I wasn’t in math right now I would feel differently but math is a difficult subject to do in the quarter system

    • VERY fast pace making it hard to fully grasp difficult concepts. Found that teachers try to solve this with more homework but I just ended up being super overwhelmed and confused

  • Not enough time when you have two very difficult classes in same semester. I sometimes have 6+ hours of homework. I’m mentally exhausted trying to maintain my 90% average.

    • This term I had chemistry and math so it was a handful

  • ​It’s difficult to stay focused nearing the end of the period 

    • Double lessons​

    • Increased amount of homework and having multiple tests a week. Too many tests in a short period of time so there is never enough time to properly study
