Y E A R L Y

Four core classes ie. mathematics, social studies, science and ELA are taught throughout the whole school year, broken down into two distinct learning semesters. Often schools use the annual system for these core classes mixed with the semester or quarter system for options classes.

Students typically have eight classes per day, each about forty to forty-five minutes in length. The four core classes, gym and health are taught throughout the whole year. However, the students options classes are on a quarter rotation still.

Pros

  • Shorter class times - this can help with engagement levels.

  • Longer time per subject -  Covering content over a longer period of time allows for in depth, carefully planned pacing of material

  • More structure - Classroom expectations, boundaries, structure, and dynamics would be stablished in September, and remain for the duration of the school year. This allows professional relationships to grow and develop with the students over a longer period of time compared to the semester or 1/4 system

  • More variation in the day - Students have 7-8 classes per day, this allows for more variation and change up

  • Consistency - Keeping classes the same the whole school year helps keep something consistent in a students ever changing life.

Cons

  • Shorter class times - From the educators perspective, short class time restricts the amount of material that can be covered each period

  • Longer time per subject - Recalling content learned from the beginning of the school year in September by the time final exams occur many months later can be a challenge to students

  • Reduced Motivation - When students work on the same subject for 8 months, their motivation level towards that subject may reduce as they get tired of the subject and need a change
