10 & 11 Survey: Semester

The following information was gathered from surveying students at a Calgary High School. The school has a student population of over 1, 400 students. In previous years, the school operated under a semester system. As a result of COVID-19, upon re-entry into the school, administrators chose to opt with the quarter system for the school calendar.

The following data was collected November 4th, 2020 from the grade 10 and 11 students. Below are some student responses about the semester system.

Academically, what is your FAVOURITE thing about the semester system?

  • Lessons aren’t that fast and you can follow easily

    • "Slower paced and time to absorb materials. More than 2 classes a day (more diversity)and shorter classes."

    • "One lesson a day."

  • Shorter classes

    • ​"It is more balanced and I can easily absorb information because class is not long."

    • "More time to absorb information."

    • "Sitting for less time."

    • "Everything’s a bit slower and classes are more in-depth so it’s easier to understand what’s going on. I also don’t have tests every second day/every day like I do night now. Tests are more spread out which gives me time to study. Homework is spread out as well."

    • "A lot more relaxed, didn’t have to cram and have a new unit every week."
